I like this panel, I like it a lot. Right now I use it to charge a all of my electronics. It folds up nicely, and doesn't weigh much. I agree with the other posters on the positive things about these panels.
These panels as individuals (not linked) are serving me and my teams very well in Iraq. We use them to power everything from MP3 Players and cell phones to advanced GPS tracking systems.
There's only one problem I have, and that is linking more than two panels together. The instructions and box say it can be done, and the box says it includes a linking cable, but there is nothing that says how. You are supposedly able to link up to three panels together, but I am unable to accomplish this no matter how I configure the cables. I've written directly to Brunton's service department for guidance, but after a month I've only gotten the read receipts from them. No answer so far. No one on any blog or forum can tell me how this is done. They are expensive, so finding someone that has bought more than one is rare.
All three panels came with the exact same cables, so I don't think I'm missing anything. There are two connection ports on each panel (it will charge two small items at the same time). As far as cables go you get one with clamps (like the kind that connects to a car battery), one female car cigarette lighter-style outlet, and another cable that has four adapters on one end and a single adapter (for plugging into the panel) on the other.
You have to use the four-ended cable to link panels. The problem is that when you plug the end with four ends into a panel there is no more room to plug in another cable. The two prongs sticking out of the sides prevent this.
Anyone with one panel could see what I mean. Try plugging both ends of your linking cable into your one panel, as would be the case on the middle panel in a series of three. Then consider how you would link three of them together.
I would love to hear from anyone that has accomplished linking more than two of these together.
Linking them together would allow us to power (real time) our field laptops and mini-satellites, we could even recharge our military satcom radio batteries. Unfortunately this isn't the case yet.
The panel is excellent and I like it a lot. I gave it a three star rating because it claims to be able to do something that it cannot (link three panels). The instructions are also lacking in this area. Brunton's customer service also leaves something to be desired, which should be your only negative consideration if you're buying only one.
Update:
I finally got a reply from Brunton concerning linking the panels. Here it is:
"To your question... The four-pronged linking cable can make the
connection between panels a bit tight. Admittedly, the design isn't the
best, but I've got three of our 26s here, hooked them up, and read
increased amperage. On the panels where you're forced to use both the
single and multi-tipped wire, I've found it's best to turn the four-tip
plug perpendicular to the flat ground, making it easier to fit the
single wire. I'll be the first to say it isn't pretty. It creates a
slight fold in the panel, and doesn't allow it to sit completely flat,
but it does make the connection, and since there's no solar receiver
over the output, it doesn't affect the efficiency.
As I said, the multi-prong cord isn't the best design. It's something
I'm trying to get them to change in the development department. Keep in
mind that hooking multiple panels together doesn't increase the total
voltage coming out of your last panel, but rather simply increases the
amperage. "

So I broke out my panels and gave it a try. Yes, by bending the panel you can make the two fit. This causes me some real problems. My initial intent was to take some cord and tie the panels down (using the nicely grommeted holes in each corner). I can't do this because the corner that's bent can't be tied down tightly. When I pull on the corner that's bent down (see pic), you can hear the plastic under strain. The four prong outlet tries to straighten out with no where to go, when you do this. I wouldn't want to tie the panel down tightly for fear of breaking something.
The answer to this of course is to make your own single male-male cable. In the rest of the email the service rep offered to send me some cables and cords that I could splice together.
One other thing I noticed is that the female cigarette outlet is completely smooth on the inside, there are no ridges or insets. Any male connector you insert into it will not "lock" into place. There is some resistance that will keep it from just falling out, but it doesn't take much to come loose. I don't think this would be a problem if the panel were laying flat. I imagine that if it were hung up the weight of some cables could cause it to come out. I've had no problems at all with powering any device using this outlet.

I also own an Asus Eee PC 900 16G. One of the prongs on the four ended cable will fit directly into the laptop. It being such a small laptop the panel WILL run it real time while charging the battery (just like it was plugged into the wall).
According to Brunton the panel kicks out 26 Watts, and says it's at 12 Volts. This means that
12 Volts X 2.2 Amps = 26 Watts
(i'm rounding slightly up on the Amps)
The EEE ASUS Power pack says it has an output of :
12 Volts X 3 Amps = 36Watts
There's obviously a little play in here, but the Brunton panel is using the same Volts at less amps, so it's safe to plug it into your EEE PC. In testing this personally it did in fact run the laptop real time and charge the battery at the same time.
I would raise my review to four stars (I can't modify it), because the panel does do what it says it will do, but it has a design flaw that makes it hard to deal with.
4th Update:
For some reason all the pictures I uploaded months ago are now gone. I don't know if that's an Amazon thing, or what. I'll try to replace them.
Might as well say something about the panel....
It's been over a year and a half and it's still holding up, no problems with wear and tear. I'm very pleased.

This baby charges up the 8 volt battery in my 1949 international tractor
parked out in the orchard quite well. I even ran over it with an empty trailer, and left it out in the rain! I can use large metal spring clamps to hang it anywhere to catch the afternoon sun. Haven't tried it camping yet.

This panel appears to work as advertised. The frame is fairly rugged and has six holes drilled for mounting. Ratings stamped on back of unit are: Rated Power: 20W +/- 5%, Isc: 1.24 Amps, Vcc: 21.5V, Im: 1.15 A, Vm: 17.2V, Test Condition: AM1.5, 100mW/cm squared, 25 degrees Centigrade. Inside the junction box on the back, there is a diode in line with one conductor to prevent reverse current flow. The plastic corner protectors are a bit thin, and two of them were cracked when I received the unit, but this was not an important enough feature to me to cause me to return the unit. Would I buy more ? I intend to buy a second unit as soon as one is available.

I bought this kit for installation on the roof of my motorhome. Delivery was delayed, and then rescheduled a couple of times, so delivery was problematic; but everything arrived in good condition. In short, I've been ecstatic about the PV panels, and kinda "meh" about everything else.
So, let's talk about the good: The panels are fantastic. Well-made, long warranty, and they consistently produce more than the advertised power when in direct sunlight (12 amps is not unheard of, according to the charge controller display; though that's only for a few minutes each day...it mostly hovers between 6 and 10 during the peak sun hours of the day). I won't hesitate to buy more Sharp solar panels when it comes time to expand my array.
The rest of the kit, however, leaves something to be desired.
The worst aspect of the kit is the lack of documentation. The solar panels have documentation, but it covers mounting on permanent structures, and with brackets wholly unlike the ones provided in the kit. The wiring examples in the solar panel documentation also has no relation to how this kit would be wired up on a motorhome or boat. The charge controller also has a little booklet, but there's nothing about mounting the panels or wiring them up on a motorhome or boat. So, you're kinda on your own when it comes to bolting them down and wiring them up; it's not rocket science, but it's not obvious either. I sent an email to Sunforce asking a couple of questions I had about the installation, and got no reply.
The Sunforce inverter is cheaply made. While it works, it is noisy and gets quite warm. The fan has also started making yucky noises in the 4 months I've used it. I bought a 1000W Wagan inverter recently, and it is quieter and cooler. Even before the fan started making noise, the inverter itself had a high pitched hum.
The provided DC meter is less than worthless. I couldn't see the indicator lights when the sun was bright enough to check the solar panels. Luckily, I have a nice DMM, so I just tossed the provided DC meter. There are DMMs for less than ten bucks on Amazon that I'm sure are better than this volt meter.
The cable provided is lighter gauge than the documentation suggests you use for runs of this length, and it only covers the run from the panels to the controller; and not the run from the controller to the battery bank. So, you're on your own there.
The mounting brackets had a couple of unthreaded nuts, which was inconvenient and a time-waster. So QC during the packaging process is kinda lax.
The charge controller is the only Sunforce-branded component in this kit that I actually like. It's small, it's cheap, and it does the job reliably and with reasonable indicator lights and display. It doesn't run hot, doesn't make noise, and looks good stuck in the wall of my motorhome. I have no complaints about it.
So, to sum up: Great solar panels, decent charge controller, but this kit is over-priced at the full-price. I paid about $850, which was about the same price as the two panels by themselves at the time, so a pretty good deal. These days, with the price being back up $1000, you'd be much better off buying the panels independently, and using the remaining $200 to buy a high quality charge controller (the Sunforce one works fine; you can get it for about 30 bucks, I think), good heavy gauge stranded copper wire, a good inverter, and higher quality brackets (hopefully with documentation that covers using those brackets). If you don't have a DMM, pick one up. You'll spend about the same amount, and end up with a much better installation when you're finished...and with nice thick wire, you can add more panels later without having to run more wire, which is not something I can say for my installation.

Don't expect 20 Watts from this product. This is the second purchase of the Extreme Power Corp's 20W Solar Panel. The first unit did not meet the specifications defined on the label attached to the rear of the panel so I purchased this second unit to determine if the first unit was faulty. The second unit performed the same way. Here are the details:
I tested the two units at 1000W/Sq. Meter in the sun (Calibration by Davis Weather station solar sensor) at 25 degC and 55 degC into a resistive 16 ohm load (VPmax/IPmax). Here are the results, spec. values in parenthesis:
Open Circuit Voltage 19.4 volts (21.18V)
P Max at 25deg C - 16.5 Watts (20 Watts)
P Max at 55deg C - 12.8 Watts (Not specified but usual operating temp)
Voltage at Pmax - 14.45 at 55 deg C (17.5 at 25 deg C)
Short Circuit Current at 55 deg C 1.0 Amps (1.33 Amps at 25 deg C)
I reported these resulte to Extreme Power Corp but there has been no comment. Two points to bear in mind. 1. - There is a tendancy to overspecify solar panel performance and 2. - Specifications are for performance at 25 deg C and no solar panel operates at this temperature.
The maximum power output under any load conditions that I can get from these panels when cool (immediately after exposing to the sun) and at 1000 W/Sq. is 16.6 Watts.
In operation do not expect more than about 14 Watts from these panels - if that is ok then the product, although misprepresented gets a pass.

I live on a river and built a campsite on an island across from my house (the dog loves it). I bought a deep-cycle marine battery but am getting too old to lug it in and out of the canoe for charging. So I got this little panel and, so far, have not run out of juice. And it's cheap enough so if someone steals it it's no big tragedy. I run a laptop, TV, fluorescent light and charge my cell phone. I even have a 12v car-vac to clean the sand out of the tent.
Of course, I'm not there 95% of the time so 5 watts is probably adequate. And I don't have to worry about overcharging. I screwed it to a big log in pretty open sun. So far, it has survived, even some small hail.
BTW, I use the power cord from an old vacuum cleaner and a 4-way 12v splitter to distribute power from the battery.

I own four of these. Got them from another source. I have all of them in a closet waiting for an extended power outage. I purchased Radio Shack #274-1573 adapters so that I can plug them directly into my four Xantrex XPower Powerpack 400 plus units (battery pack power sources). These power packs give me both 12 Volt DC and 115 Volt AC. I keep them fully charged by plugging them in to the wall socket. As for choosing solar panels, If I could afford it (and I was many years younger) I might have purchased the much more expensive monocrystalline solar panels. They retain 80% of original efficiency after twenty five years of continuous use. By contrast, these much cheaper S-1116 briefcase panels will only last about five years of continuous use. Also, the monocrystalline panels are much more efficient and thus smaller while producing higher wattage. A nice portable monocrystalline briefcase is available at much higher cost. It is even somewhat weather proof. The S-1116 is not weather proof. If you want to set up a lifetime solar power source, buy monocrystalline solar panels. But, I assume you are only wanting a portable solar power source for emergencies. If so, I think this cheaper S-1116 is your best choice. It might also be a good choice considering that they do last five years - and the scientific community is continuously improving, and reducing cost of, everything electronic. All four of my panels tested better than advertised. Maybe I should have given the S-1116 five stars.

Took the panel to Death Valley for a few days to charge my trailer battery and while I ran laptop and iPod stereo for hours during the night, it quickly recharged the battery the next morning. If the Xantrex Xpower Powerpack Solar lived up to its specifications, I would rate it 5 stars and consider it well worth the money. That's why I bought it in the first place. Unfortunately, its performance falls short of the manufacturer's claims.
The overall design of the product is very nice. I had considered building something similar based on a how-to article in Popular Science, but the Powerpack is so nicely packaged for only a couple dollars more, I chose to buy it.
The Powerpack disappoints in the amount of energy stored in its battery that is available to power other electronic devices. The battery is specified as 12 volts and 10 amp-hours. As such, I was expecting to get as much as 120 watt-hours from it, but I barely get half that.
As a test, I fully charged the battery using the included AC adapter. By "fully", I mean the unit claimed to be charged. I then ran the built-in LED lights. The manual claims they should run for 48 hours. They ran 27.5 hours for me.
I assumed this performance reflected a bad unit and exchanged it. The new unit performs similarly. Either the battery in the unit performs poorly, or the electronics to monitor and control the battery state-of-charge are weak.
As another example of the poor performance, I charged the unit completely (again based on its built-in indicator that charging is done). It indicated 100 percent charge when I turned on the AC or DC output, but as soon as I plugged in any load, it almost immediately dropped to 70 or even 60 percent. Soon after the unit's indicator dropped to 40 percent, the unit shut itself down.
So, on the one hand, this is a nice unit to carry around, and it does slowly-but-surely charge the internal battery using the included 5 watt solar panel. It does a fine job charging cell phones and iPods, and a barely acceptable job charging a notebook computer. Compared to its specifications, and for that matter my previous experience with the Xantrex Powerpack Mobile Mini, however, the product is a disappointment.

I bought this Go Power! 95 watt solar kit from a local RV dealer early this year. I liked this panel because it was one of the smallest panels that I could find that still put out a lot of power. I have not had to worry about dead batteries since I had the kit installed on my travel trailer. The panel really does get power even in overcast days. This kit comes with a 25 amp charge controller so I can add more panels to the system down the road without changing the regulator, although I don't think I need to at this time. The display shows the voltage of the batteries and current that the panel is putting into my batteries. All in all the kit does what it claimed to do and I am very satisfied with the system.

Panel was received on time. Panel seems to work well as it maintains the charge on a 75AH marine battery which powers an automatic gate opener. Mounting was slightly difficult as it must be attached from the underside. I had afix brackets to the bottom of the panel and mount the brackets to an existing support pole.

I purchased this for trickle charging the battery on my tractor. It tends to sit (covered) in a sunny spot, and, it is an electricity hog when I use the lights on it. It has worked well for about a month maintaining the charge on the battery, making up for the poor output of the old generator on the tractor, and boosting the starting and lighting power.
This unit provides a constance 0.15 amp charge. I have a few concerns. I hooked up a high quality voltmeter to it and the charge read somewhere between 16 volts and 18 volts (off the scale on my volt meter). Under a load (once connected to the battery) it may read a lower voltage but I have not measured it under load.
My other concern is that this does not have any kind of voltage regulator. When your battery reaches its full charge there is a possibility of overcharging the battery.
In any event, it charges a battery over a period of about four days and keeps it charged.
A real plus to this unit is that it is accompanied by an excellent array of leads. It has an extension cord that is about 8 feet long. There are four types of leads enclosed with the package.
The first are bare wires (+ and - (red & black)) that, on the other end, plug into the unit or the extension cord.
The second are a set of alligator clips (+ and - (red & black)) that, on the other end, plug into the unit or the extension cord.
The third is a male cigar lighter adapter that plugs into the unit or the extension cord.
The fourth is a female cigar lighter adapter that plugs into the unit or the extension cord.
All of the connections and leads are of good to high quality.
With these attachments, you have the versatility you need to hook it up to any vehicle or 12v battery.
This is well worth the $50 (approximate cost plus shipping).

Funny, a previous review went on about how this is not a real generator that produces electricty. I guess he would go on about how he can not actually drive a model airplane either. I am still laughing that someone would waste time stating the obvious. What this is, is a beautifully made piece of lawn art, made in the shape of a wind generator, which the description actually explains. He then went on to give it one star based on his assessment of this as a generator. The intellegence of some of the reviews here still amuses me. Needless to say, being made of SolarMax helps with fading, I have many items made of this great fabric, and the design is impressive, we added this to our beach collection of kites and banners for the upcoming Memorial Day. Another beautiful item that says I am proud to be an American, and proud of those who have defended my right to says that. It would look great in any yard.

*Update* 6-2010, while my original panels are still running strong so long as I hose them down once a month, I've noticed that the PVC pipe provided to hold them in place has become brittle with sun exposure, hence I would now in 20/20 hindsight recommend a coat of Krylon Fusion Dover White Plastic Satin Spray Paint on the PVC parts to prevent UV cracking later in life. I do not think the Krylon Fusion product was available when I first setup my first panels but UV cracking of the support structure could cause panel damage in years 2 and 3.
Meanwhile Amazon got their hands on some obsolete & discontinued Sharp panels (12.5% efficiency vs the new 13.1% efficiency) - if you are serious about needing lots of solar power in a small space, this is a big kit - you can view it here: Sunforce 39126 246-Watt High-Efficiency Polycrystalline Solar Power Kit
My only concern about the kit is that due to the new panels being higher efficiency means it will be difficult to match panels if you find you still need more power later on. The other con on that system is it's price -- $1300+ but you get the wattage, along with a cheap charge controller and inverter, both of which could be upgraded for better system performance. It's just another solar system to consider in the $5/watt or less pricepoint for DIYers.
Update 9-18-2008 - Still going strong. I am very pleased with the summer power output of these panels. I wash them with a hose 1x/mo to keep the output current up. Measured before washing and after washing the panel efficiency is clearly a factor of how much dirt is on them. No problems long term on a roof though!
Update 2-20-2008 - goes with graph "photograph" #3 above - pink line is power and blue line is amps from the panel x 10 to share the graph. The X axis is panel voltage. Data was acquired using an Agilent dummy load with programmable voltage in 1V steps from 1V to 22V (open circuit voltage on the panel) on a partially cloudy day in winter sun. Expectations are for 2-3 times performace in summer sun provided the panels don't get too hot. These are on my house roof laying flat on a 3/12 pitch facing due south which is suboptimal but easy for me to do. Be sure to read the photo notes. Sorry about the colors excel defaulted to!
This is a MPPT chart (maximum power point tracking) - you can see that the panels are optimized for charging a 12V wet cell right out of the box. Charge current turns on when battery voltage drops down to 13.0 VDC and turns off at 14.2 VDC with the supplied charge controller in the kit.
The only other interesting fact in 2 months is to keep your panels clean. My maximum current was 5.0 A on a cold morning with bright sun until it rained hard and washed the panels clean. The current went up to 7.0 A maximum right after the rainstorm. Below is the original review - these panels have been running constant for 2 months now into 3 parallel deep cycle marine cells (315 AH) connected to the prosine inverter below to drain the energy made.
When reading the power/current chart you should keep in mind the amps have been multiplied by 10 so they use the same Y axis (so 20A on the chart corresponds to 2.0 A panel current) Watts are actual volts*amps. This was taken in the winter with partial clouds - expectations are for a X3 improvement during summertime but its still february and I'm in the northern hemisphere so we'll have to wait and see. Basically an MPPT charger won't gain but a few watts with this panel so it's not a good investment unless you already have one laying around.
(Begin original review after buying panels)
I never seem to be overwhelmed by the latest shipment of product from China, but this one seems to show some promise and shows signs of good cost engineering and a complete design that can be set up quickly by one person with very little effort. I'd give it 5 stars if it were well packed, but my purchase turned into a shipping fiasco.
Most ALL solar installations are rated in $/watt much like new homes are rated in $/sq ft. We'll get to the sq ft bit later. Here you are getting 60W for 320 dollars or about 5.33 $/watt. Compared to a similar wattage panel, the BP solar 365U rated at 65W and priced (street) at 399 or 6.13 $/watt the amazon package seems to be a good deal when you consider it comes complete less battery (we'll hit that one later too)
In fact, the amazon package deal includes a xantrex 175 watt inverter with a .15A "idle" current designed for solar systems where current consumption must be minimized. It even includes a simple diode/switch "charge regulator" with 2 leds to indicate panel voltage and battery is full but lacks the ability to tell it what type of battery you are using (full is defined at 14.2 volts give or take so it's for wet/flooded cells). Neither of these are big buck items, but they do set you up for a complete small scale solar kit minus the battery out of the box, which is impressive.
Oh yes, the battery. I also ordered the duracell 480W inverter+28AH battery with this panel so I'd have a battery. Also made by Xantrex, it's a nice piece to complete the system. I made the mistake of ordering it with the solar panels (read on)
So how does China produce a complete kit for a lower $/watt price than professional solar companies like BP solar, GE, Kyocera, etc? Well - it's the sq ft part we forgot about for a while. This uses 4 panels @ 15W each to get up to 60 watts with a simple parallel adapter included in the kit. The BP solar is one panel about the size of 1 of these 15W panels, or put another way, is 1/4 the sq footage. So if you are planning on covering your roof with these, think again because you'd need a really big house and have lots of 7A charge diodes and 175W inverters kicking around when you are done. The reason for the 4:1 size difference is the China panels are made using a silicon deposition on glass technique with a very thin film and correspondingly thin output, while other manufacturers use a silicon wafer production method that is roughly 4x more efficient in area, and somewhat more expensive as a result.
Ok - now onto packaging. We need to get this from China to Amazon and finally to the consumer. On the first attempt FEDX carefully placed my fragile glass solar panels on the concrete then put 2ea 60lb batteries on top of them, cracking the glass on all 4 panels. After returning that to amazon, we tried again, this time without the batteries and shipping the system by itself. FEDX again noted shipment damage which wrecked 1 of the 4 panels, but running on 3/4 panels it does work, just not with full output. Amazon has given up because they will only ship and ruin something twice instead of making fedx pay up for piling 120 lbs of batteries on top of the glass panels and poking through the box & styrofoam the second time so I am still in negotiation with them about the shipment, however the product does deserve mention while I have it.
PERFORMANCE:
The design is actually quite well done. You can make (with 4 panels) a 12V (actually 15V) x 4A system, or a 30V x 2A or a 60V x 1A configuration depending on your power inverter and battery collection. For me, this will always be tied into a 12VDC bus so it is fine as shipped, but the flexibility is there if you have other voltages in use. There is no skimping on wire with 16 foot cords on each panel which helps to minimize power lost in the wire since each panel has its own cordset going to the combiner, after which runs are kept short. On a cloudy day I was able to get 2 amps from 3 panels (30 W) - in full sun it peaked at 5.91A with 3 panels, so the Chinese manufacturing has under-rated their output as 90W from a 1/4 dead 60W panel in winter sun is doing very good - I'd like to know how it performs in the summer!
As for mounting, a very clever system was designed to support the panels out of 1" PVC tubing with elbows and T's - all of this is assembled with a singular bolt/wingnut style and the pipes have slots milled into them to ensure that the panels will line up one way or another without breaking after you get them. It has a prop-up leg system for use on the ground or can lay flat if placed on a roof that is already angled towards the sun. There isn't a provision for connecting multiple systems together, however you could make one out of sprinkler pipes you probably have.
All this really needs to be a well designed solar kit is 1) better packaging and 2) a battery. Even with 25% of my panels broken and removed from the system, it still managed to charge a car battery in under 1 cloudy winter day.
I'm impressed with the product, however disappointed with the shipper. I've also run up against Amazon's policy of two strikes and they are out meaning they won't negotiate for repair or replacement as the shipper on my behalf. I can return it alltogether or pay 100% for 75% of a system so it's probably going back tomorrow (monday) - but my testing this weekend has shown that the product warrants consideration for people who
A) Need to keep their starting batteries charged year round (2nd cars, generators, etc) outside where AC power is not convenient.
B) People lacking A/C power somewhere and would like to run a small refrigerator (purchase a Xantrex Technologies Prosine 1,000 to 1,500-Watt Power Inverter #1000 TRUE SINEWAVE power inverter to run any motor load without damage) - for 12V refrigeration needs its best to AVOID both inverters and peltier...Read more›

Hi- I bought this set-up to keep my Motorhome charged when not using it. It is only 15 watts so can barely keep the battery up to charge if I am actually using any lights or other stuff but it will keep up with the draw of the refridgerator and minimal stuff. My only beef is the controller wires could have all been pre-terminated with connectors rather than having me do that. This was bought as a kit so it would have been nice if there was a connector on the input side of the controller that mated witht he connector on teh solar panel and a different style connector on the output that would be compatible with the cigarette-lighter adapter, etc. In other words- all set up to just plug in and go.
Once I soldered and shrinkwrapped the new connectors on I'm pretty happy with it. Not everyone has the ability to properly terminate the wires.
