DuroStar DS7200Q 6,000 Watt Diesel Powered Fully Enclosed Portable Generator With Wireless Remote & Electric Start Review

I purchased a DS7200Q (DuroStar) generator from Maxtool (the trademark holder) in January 2010. By mid-Feburary I was having to order replacement parts. By April, I found metal and paper in the oil crank case. I took photos of the metal fragments and paper and sent them to MaxTool. They suggested I have the generator evaluated by a diesel repair shop. The repair shop found the connector rod was sheared. Clearly a defective machine, but MaxTool refuses to replace the engine or refund me. All of this happened before the generator even logged 50 hrs. Now I have a $1000 diesel generator that is useless, plus the cost of the "evaluation". They do not have any concern for customer service, nor do they stand behind their products.

Purchased for use with a 4200 SQFT home;I had researched purchasing a generator for 2 years before actually purchasing this until. I purchased the 20KW with whole house transfer switch. I would highly reccomend purchasing the unit with the whole house switch as you would not want to be limited by how many circuits you can have hooked up to the generator. I have a
200AMP service with 42 breakers installed and a 100 amp sub panel with 8 breakers installed. My old main panel is now a sub panel and the transfer switch is no considered my main.
We were lucky that our electrician is a factory trained Generac installer. The total cost of this installation which includes the unit and installation (gas hook up as well) was $7200.00. They first came out and installed the transfer switch and sorted all my netural and grounds in my main panel. Hooked the power back up and left for the day. The next day they installed the Gas and the 3 power lines to the generator as well as put the generator in place. The 3rd day was just testing and adjustments.
The Generator is set up to exersize every Monday for 13 minutes as reccmended by the factory. We dedcided to utlize quite mode while the system exercises. Well that was a mistake. Every time the system was to exercise, the unit would error out and not start. THERE IS A BUG in quite mode. I did research online and come to find out it is a common problem. The bad news is Generac has not come up with a suitable fit other than reccomending to bend the choke plate. However, I changed the settings to run in normal mode and the Genrator cycles fine durning its weekely exercise.
Other than the minor bug in quite mode. I would HIGHLY reccomend this product. It is the perfect size and price point is right.

Average Reviews:

I purchased this generator in August of 2008. I live in an area (upstate NY) where we lose power frequently. The item arrived and was delivered to my back yard in perfect working order.
We recently had a very bad ice storm in the Northeast and we lost power for 3 days. The generator worked perfectly running my sump pump, hot water heater (gas, direct vent), furnace, fridge (2) and several lights. I had to run power cords from outside rather than use the NEMA power cord to a manual transfer switch I had installed before the generator was delivered (more on that later). I ran the house for 10-12 hours on the 2 20lb propane tanks before I needed to change them out, which was to me, excellent. The generator is very quiet, we could barely hear it in the house. I have it installed behind my garage facing downwind of the house.
Okay, the transfer switch issue. While the manual, Briggs & Stratton web site, Briggs & Stratton FAQ page does not specifically state this, you MUST purchase the B&S manual transfer switch PERIOD! The model number is Briggs & Stratton 71014 - PowerNow Generator Transfer Kit (10 Circuits). This is the only transfer switch that works with the GFCI breaker installed in the generator. I had 3 electricians (friends of mine) look at the gen-tran 30 amp transfer switch wiring that was installed in my house and it is NOT a switching neutral switch.
Confused? I was too until I got on the phone with a very nice B&S technician who told me to only use their switch. I was dissapointed as I then needed to shell out another $400.00 but now it's working fine. I did let B&S know that they should be specific about the fact that only their switch is compatible with these types of generators. It is because of this fact that I only rated it 4 stars.
All in all that one storm alone made this purchase worth every penny. It also kept the house in harmony (if you know what I mean).
I would heartly recommend this generator to anyone who is looking for a well built powerful and quiet standby generator. Just make sure you buy the 71014 - PowerNow Generator Transfer Kit from B&S

I've had it for 4-5 years. Power went out during Ike. Generator was on for more than a week and suddenly stopped. It was low on oil.
As soon as I added oil, it started again (a little to soon, I got splattered) I change to oil and filters myself. I save about $200 of the $250 charge from Generac.

Experience fast-acting, automatic protection from power loss with the Generac Guardian Series 5871 10,000 / 9,000 Watt Air-Cooled Propane/Natural Gas Powered Automatic Standby Generator with Steel Enclosure. Ideal for home use, this generator powers up automatically and within seconds of a power outage without the need for any manual startup. Without any buttons to push or cords to plug in, an automatic standby generator starts up by itself even when you're away! Featuring easy installation, it comes pre-wired and packaged with virtually everything necessary to connect to your home's electrical system and existing LP or natural gas fuel supply, so you can be protected the next time the lights go out.
Hands-Free Automatic Operation When the power goes out, this generator eliminates the trouble of dealing with a fuse box in a dark basement or going outside in a storm to start a portable generator. After all LP or natural gas and electrical connections are completed, the Generac 5871 is ready to run 24/7 and requires absolutely no manual operation, no fueling, and no extension cords. The generator responds within seconds of power outages, so inconveniences like heat or air conditioning loss and burst pipes or spoiled food are quickly avoided.

Initial setup is easy. The generator arrives pre-wired and equipped with the necessary installation gear: a 10-circuit transfer switch (NEMA 1, indoor-rated only), pre-wired conduits, an outdoor connection box, a flexible fuel line pigtail, and a composite mounting pad. (Additional items and tools may be needed to complete the installation to meet local codes. Consult a licensed professional for further details.)

The unit can be programmed to perform a weekly exercise at the time of your choice, so it will be ready for continuous and reliable operation on a moment's notice. For your convenience, it also offers a two-line LCD digital controller, an at a glance indicator light and system status LED, plus an easy-to-access external main circuit breaker.

Superior Technology for Secure Output, Quiet Operation, and Durability Thanks to Generac's exclusive True Power Technology, this generator provides clean, continuous power, so sensitive electronics and microchip appliances like laptops and HVAC equipment can be operated without the worry that unexpected power surges bring. The ultra-quiet design means that noise levels during self-tests are 1/3 quieter than portable generators, so your daily routine is unaffected.

The generator's corrosion-resistant, galvanized steel enclosure is protected by Generac's proprietary RhinoCoat system--a unique process that binds the paint to the metal surface for a long-lasting, durable finish. This allows the generator to sit outdoors and withstand harsh weather conditions without developing an unsightly appearance.

Like all Generac generators, this model is UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listed for safety.

Rugged, Worry-Free Design The generator features the 530cc Generac OHVI® Engine, an exclusive air-cooled generator engine with a high-performance design that can accommodate large electrical loads. The engine optimizes power to respond swiftly to changing conditions. To add to your peace of mind, the engine requires routine maintenance only once every two years, or after 200 hours of use.

This Generac generator meets CARB requirements. It requires a Group 26R 12-volt minimum 525 CCA battery (sold separately).

What's in the Box Generac Guardian Series 5871 10,000 / 9,000 Watt (LP/NG) Automatic Standby Steel Generator; 100 Amp NEMA 1 automatic transfer switch with 10 circuit load center; 30-foot, 5-foot, and 2-foot pre-wired conduits; outdoor connection box; 1-foot flexible fuel line pigtail; composite mounting pad; installation guide and owner's manual.

It's actually a 13HP Honda motor so the headline in the listing is incorrect. I'm rating it 5 stars because I only paid $1200 for this generator. The 13HP Honda motor that comes in it costs almost that much by itself. The current price is $1900 which is still a pretty good deal for Honda power bolted to a Hitachi generator, probably 4 stars at that price.

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am very happy with this generator, but I would not recommend using it for electronic equipment (computers, TV's, etc), as it is not very stable, especially under large loads.
I ran a test to see what it could handle, below is a description of the items I turned on, and the order in which they were enabled. I connected this generator up to my whole house using a 200 amp manual transfer switch, which was professionally installed by an electrician. The transfer switch has a watt-ometer on it, so I can estimate how much wattage I am using.
1)100 Gallon Hot Water Heater: ~4800 watts. (I opened all the hot water taps to make sure that the heater was running.)
2)3 ton air conditioner (Trane XL19i) ~3600 watts (Set temperature to 65F to ensure that both compressors were working)
3)2 refrigerators. ~800 watts each. (set the temperature to the coldest setting on both of them to make sure they were running)
4)20" TV. ~300 watts
5)PC w/ 2x21" monitors ~300 watts total
6)Washing Machine ~500 watts (put a load in for the spin cycle)
7)Dishwasher ~500 watts
8)Pool Pump ~500 watts
So far all of the above was running at the same time, and everything was fine except the backup battery alarms on the TV and the PC were sounding. It seems the power was not stable enough for those devices, so I turned them off.
I kept everything else running, and I was determined to overload the generator to see if it would shut off as described in the manual. So, I proceeded to turn on some more large and medium appliances.
9)Clothes Dryer ~5700 watts
10)4 stove top burners set to high ~200 watts each
11)Oven set to 450F ~5000 watts?
12)6 overhead lights ~100 watts each
13)Sprinkler / Well Pump ~500 watts
14)Microwave oven set to High ~1500 watts
15)Garbage Disposal ~200 watts
I ran out of appliances and large items that I could turn on. All of the above was running at the same time, which of course is not a typical household scenario. I was very impressed.
My electrician told me that electrical devices all have exaggerated wattage ratings, so you cannot simply look at the back of device and determine how much wattage it will use. This is why my numbers add up to way more than 15,000 watts. In addition, the rating on a generator is the minimum it can handle, so it is possible that the generator could be producing slightly over 15,000 watts, depending on quality of fuel and other factors. Regardless, this test proves that the generator can handle your whole household without a problem, just keep your electronic devices plugged into a more stable generator.
It is quite loud. It sounds like a Harley running at 3500 rpm. Much louder than my 3000 watt generator, and louder than my 2300 psi pressure cleaner. The smell of the exhaust is very strong as well, so keep ventilation at a maximum. Don't place it next to any bushes as the bush will die from the heat and carbon monoxide (I know this from my own experience ;-)
On a separate test, I ran the generator for an extended time period to see how much fuel it uses. I plugged it into my house and ran a more limited set of appliances which would represent a typical day. The fuel consumption was about 1 gallon per hour, so keep this in mind when storing fuel for something like a hurricane. I purchased a fuel storage tank which can hold 120 gallons with a pump on it, and I can also keep 17 more gallons in the generator itself. Of course there is the risk of all this fuel going stale very quickly, so I only purchase it when I see a hurricane coming. If I never need it, I just use it for my cars.

ETQ TG72K12 8,250 Watt 13 HP 420cc 4-Cycle OHV Gas Powered Portable Generator with Electric Start

I had not previously heard of this brand, but Amazon's great price made it hard to pass up. I purchased this generator for home emergency purposes. I Ordered it on Sunday night and received it on the following Thursday. There was no visual damage to the box that would indicate rough handling by the shipper. However, upon removing the generator from the box there was minor damage to a couple of items (nothing that would prevent operation). I called the manufacturer and the representative politely agreed to replace the items.
The generator does not come with a battery for the electric starter. The manufacturer's representative stated that it required an Everstart ES12N94B1 battery, which I found at Wal-mart. After adding oil and a little gas the generator started right up with only three easy pulls (I had not installed the battery at that point). The generator started so easy, in fact, that I am considering taking the battery back and not using the electric starter. This generator appears to be of good quality and at this point I am completely satisfied with the product.

As ETQ's most robust gas-powered portable generator, the TG72K12 provides quiet, efficient power to electrical appliances. You'll get the performance you need thanks to the 14-horsepower, 420-cc engine that produces up to 8,250 watts of energy--enough power to run your TV, refrigerator, water heater, or other household appliance for up to 10-1/2 hours at a 50-percent load. And you'll love the generator's oversized muffler that provides quiet operation, as well as its electric start and auto throttle control that provide convenience and efficiency.
Engine is Easy-to-Operate, Durable, and EfficientThe TG72K12 features a powerful, 14-horsepower, 420-cc, four-stroke, gas-powered OHV engine that is capable of producing 7,250 continuous watts and 8,250 maximum watts. Its easy-pull recoil and electric-start make for reliable startups every time.
The engine isn't just powerful, it's also quiet. Thanks to its oversized muffler, the TG72K12 portable generator produces sound at just 70 decibels during operation.
And with a 6.42-gallon fuel tank and efficient power delivery, the engine is capable of running a 50-percent load for up to 10-1/2 hours or a 100-percent load for 6 hours and 36 minutes.
The engine also features auto throttle control technology, which automatically speeds up the engine when power is needed. This helps increase the longevity of the engine and also increases fuel efficiency.
Alternator Technology Safely Delivers Electricity to Your AppliancesOne of the most innovative features of the TG72K12 is its ETQ Clean Sine Alternator Technology that ensures low total harmonic distortion (THD). THD is a measure of the quality of the electricity produced by a generator, and THD above six percent can damage electronics and other components over time. With THD of less than five percent, the TG72K12 ensures high-quality, safe delivery of electricity from the generator to your electrical components.
With low THD, this generator is computer-friendly, meaning it's completely safe to use with laptops, printers, desktop computers, and more. The TG72K12 will give you peace of mind knowing that your computer hardware is completely safe from power surges and bad-quality electricity.

Additionally, there's an included 120-volt, 30-amp RV connection for added versatility.
Heavy-Duty Steel Construction That's Built for PortabilityEverything--from the engine's heavy-duty cast-iron sleeves to the durable one-inch rolled steel tubing surround--is built to last. And with semi-pneumatic foam wheels and a fold-down handle, the generator is easy to move and store. The generator weights 207 pounds and measures just 32.87 x 22.24 x 23.82 inches (LxWxH).
Outlets Feature Circuit-Breaker ProtectionThe generator offers several ways to connect your appliances or electrical equipment. There are two 120-volt outlets available for most of your everyday, low-wattage appliances, such as fans, TVs, computers, microwaves, and toasters. There's also a convenient, 240-volt twist-lock outlet for running single, higher-wattage appliances and electrical equipment, such as water heaters or central air conditioners. Finally, there's a 120-volt, 30-amp RV connection for even more usage options.
All of the outlets on the TG72K12 Portable Generator are circuit-breaker protected to eliminate the risk of power-surge damage, which can potentially ruin your appliances and electrical equipment.

Briggs & Stratton 40302 12,000 Watt IntelliGen Air Cooled Home Standby Generator Review

Briggs and Stratton 40302 12,000 Watt IntelliGen Air Cooled Home Standby Generator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a Briggs and Stratton 12000 standby home generator less than a year ago. It "exercises" once per week for 15-30 min and in the winter, I noticed that the engine was laboring badly. Upon inspection, I found that the air intake, which is only 6 inches off the ground and faces down, was covered by snow. I am told that the engine could be damaged if it ran beyond the short exercise period. I called B&S to ask about a solution. They were aware of the problem and recommended that I clear the snow after every storm. I explained that I will be away from the house and they suggested that I have my neighbors do it--I live in the country. Clearly, this is a design-flaw on their part that could be remedied by some retro-fitting. In addition, I found two of the plastic air exhaust and circulation covers lying on the ground this spring allowing small animals to access the engine. I tried to replace them but the plastic snap pins no longer held tight. B&S service said that they were aware of this problem and that I should cut away the plastic pins and replace them with small stainless steel bolts. I would do this except the area is wholly inaccessible unless the top is removed which is a major undertaking and one that could potentially invalidate warranty. Again, I was very surprised to see that B&S took no responsibility for these problems which are both clearly design flaws. Bottom-line, if you live in an area that encounters cold and snow like we do, I would stay away from this generator. In addition, consider the complete lack of responsibility by B&S for their faulty product design.

This is an excellent and full-featured unit. I had it professionally installed by an experienced electrical contractor and the local propane company provided a dedicated tank and made the gas connections. Literally no PM for the first two years. Built-in trickle charger keeps the battery charged. Auto mode runs a self-test weekly.

I was apprehensive about buying this generator because they don't have a network of service centers... they tell you to take it to any small engine shop near you and contact them about charges under warranty. I called their cust svc and talked with them about the need for third party verification regarding parts needed and they assured me none was required.. I could fix it myself if I wanted.. just call them and tell them what I needed and they'd send it out. That seemed fair enough. It took a little over a week to get mine and it was delivered by USF Holland freight and arrived in pristine condition.. hats off to Holland. I got the liftgate delivery and he backed that big semi right up to my garage door...took his hand truck and set the small skid it was banded to in the center of my garage.. he required no help.. I never touched it until he was gone. These come packed in a cardboard carton and the packaging is well engineered.. thick foam all sides.. top and bottom.. all loose parts.. wheel kit.. etc.. in their own little nook in the foam. It is very heavy but you can get it assembled and off the skid working alone.. I did and I'm 62 yrs old. I pulled the front until it overhung the skid about 10" and assembled the wheel kit then pivoted one side of the rear until it overhung and assembled that strut then blocked the rear strut up with a 4x4 and pulled the skid out of the way and assembled the other strut. I filled it with good synthetic blend oil and put about a gallon of gas in it. I turned the fuel valve on.. it's located a few inches to the right of the choke handle. I pulled the choke handle all the way out and tried to start it with the key... the battery was totally dead. I pulled it out and put it on the charger and stuck the battery outa my lawn tractor in it and tried to start it. It was running almost before I could let go of the key. These Powermax units all have an idle control on them so there's no speed adjustments of any kind possible and none needed. It idles very fast.. all generators do.. they have to to produce current. It ran smooth with no fluctuating noticeable in engine speed. Next I took my voltmeter and checked the output on all the current-carrying poles on all the receptacles. I got a steady 119 volts everywhere. With a target of 120 I considered this to be excellent.. my house current won't hold that. The reason I bought this big unit in the first place was I had hoped it would start and run my big window air conditioner... it is huge.. 30k btu's. I plugged the extension cord I had bought into the L14-30 240v receptacle on the generator and ran it inside the house and plugged up the conversion cord I'd made going to the 6-30 plug on the air conditioner and turned it on. It fired right up with no bogging down and I never noticed the engine on the genny pick up at all. I let it run about a half hour... let the compressor on the air conditioner cycle off and on many times and watched the voltmeter on the genny. It never moved.. engine really never picked up speed either so this generator runs that big air conditioner without any strain on it at all.. I was VERY relieved. The other things I plan to run during an outage won't even approach the surge requirements of that big air conditioner so that issue was put to rest. It turned out that the battery in mine was no good.. wouldn't hold a charge even a half hour. I called MaxTool and told them and true to their word there was no hassle.. they sent me a brand new battery and shipped it FexEx at no charge. I wondered if maybe I had been sent a generator that had been sitting in inventory a year or so but no.. the data tag on it shows a MFG date of May 2007.. I bought it in late August so I got a brand new one.. just had a bad battery. I tried the pull start several times and it always starts on one pull. I go out about once every two weeks and start it and let it run awhile to get oil thru it good.. keep a maintenance trickle charger on it all the time. I can't speak to what it will do over time but outa the box it's everything it was promised to be.. I love it so far. I almost bought a Coleman but those units got horrible reviews.. rampant with quality issues.. leaking gas all over.. horrible vibration issues.. etc.. also they have no idle control and most no electric start and are overpriced terribly. I'm glad I bought this Powermax... couldn't be happier at this point.. good luck to you.

I've had my Generac generator for 5 years and the two times I've needed it, it's failed within 1 hour of use. It "excercised" fine weekly and was regularly maintained by a Generac Service Provider but still didn't work when needed. Over the course of five years we've had to replace an electrical board, the rotor, the stator, the brushes and the last straw was one morning while excercising, the engine blew blowing a hole in the side of the block. Generac's "resolution team" was absolutely no help, simply repeating that the warranty expired after three years. Avoid these things like the plague and get yourself a good portable generator.

Experience fast-acting, automatic protection from power loss with the Generac Guardian Series 5873 17,000 / 16,000 Watt Air-Cooled Propane/Natural Gas Powered Automatic Standby Generator with Steel Enclosure.
After all LP or natural gas and electrical connections are completed, the Generac 5873 is ready to run 24/7 and requires absolutely no manual operation, no fueling, and no extension cords. The generator responds within seconds of power outages, so inconveniences like heat or air conditioning loss and burst pipes or spoiled food are quickly avoided.

Initial setup is easy. The generator arrives pre-wired and equipped with the necessary installation gear: a 16-circuit transfer switch (NEMA 1, indoor-rated only), pre-wired conduits, an outdoor connection box, a flexible fuel line pigtail, and a composite mounting pad. (Additional items and tools may be needed to complete the installation to meet local codes. Consult a licensed professional for further details.)

The unit can be programmed to perform a weekly exercise at the time of your choice, so it will be ready for continuous and reliable operation on a moment's notice. For convenience, it also offers clear, digital controls, an at-a-glance status indicator, and an external GFCI outlet to accomodate your outdoor power needs.

Also featuring Generac's patented Quiet-Test technology, this generator is truly neighborhood-friendly: it's self-test mode is as hushed as an idling car to ensure that your daily routine is unaffected.

Rugged, Worry-Free Design The generator features the 992cc Generac OHVI® Engine, an exclusive air-cooled generator engine with a high-performance design that can accommodate large electrical loads.
