(More customer reviews)After much research - I decided on getting the best machine on the market!
I just received my Jiffy Steamer J-4000 Pro-Line Series Garment Steamer a few days ago, and quite frankly, I'm amazed at its effectiveness!
First of all, assembling it was incredibly simple - took no more than 5 minutes. The machine comes with no more than 4-5 pieces to put together, and a wrench is included for free (so no extra personal tools needed). It comes on casters for easily mobility. It doesn't take much storage space (20 inches wide - 10 inch depth).
It has 3 settings: Off, Preheat and Steam, so there is no complication. Also, it has automatic shut-off - and the best part: if you're planning to use it throughout the day, you can leave it on preheat to conserve water! Just switch to steam when ready and you're ready to steam immediately!
Once assembled, you pour no more than 4 quarts of water (tap water or distilled water is fine) into the machine (while it's off), then turn on, switch the setting to "pre-heat", then wait about 15 minutes. You know it's ready to be switched to "steam" when the indicator light starts blinking on and off. You then switch to steam and wait about 2 minutes for the steam to start. Then you're ready to go (and go and go - this machine is capable of over 1.5 hours of steam time!)
Steaming the clothes is very simple. As you go along, you'll find that some fabrics steam much easier than others, and you'll learn different methods of steaming different types of fabric. Some fabrics do perfectly steaming from the outside - some lend themselves better to the steaming process if you steam from the INSIDE of the garment. Other fabrics take longer to steam, others take only a few minutes. But in all cases - hold the fabric taut with one hand while steaming - helps remove the wrinkles faster!
Just make sure you keep the steamhead in an upright position when steaming so the condensation can go back into the machine - if you don't do this - you'll hear a lot of sputtering. To stop the sputter, just place the steam head on its storage hanger and it will stop immediately!
In addition to removing wrinkles, this steamer helps remove smells from fabric!
The only "shortcoming" about this machine is that steaming long dresses is cumbersome (but not impossible). The steamer stands approx. 5 feet tall (I'm 5'2) - however, long garments/dresses call for you to get on your knees or sit down on the floor or chair to steam comfortably. However, if you're sitting on the floor, after several minutes of steaming, you start to hear sputtering and then you have to stop and place steamhead upright again. But the height might be industry standard. However, so much good outweighs this small inconvenience, that I would be willing to LAY DOWN on the floor to steam dresses!
In summary, I recommend this machine 100%. Don't settle for cheapies - in the long run they may cost you more to own than this "workhorse"!

(More customer reviews)I was skeptical at first because I have a hard time trusting brands like Conair but I purchased this one anyway and it works great. Produces lots of steam so make sure you're careful when steaming! People complain about it leaking and not producing steam after a period of time....if they read the instructions they would know that it only leaks if the water container goes below half and that you're supposed to decalcify the unit from time to time (using a 3:1 water-vinegar solution) to remove any mineral buildup in the unit so that it produces steam normally. Avoid the problem altogether by using distilled or demineralized water only. Take care of it and it works like a charm. The only thing I don't fancy is that the steam hose gets pretty hot. The handle gets warm but not enough to be a problem.

(More customer reviews)Got mine at Costco for $36 (couldn't pass it up at that price). I've been wanting a clothes steamer for a while, since I used one at a friend's house about 5 years ago (not this brand). I saw a website review on a sharper image model that had a trigger to allow the steam to emit from the nozzle which looked good. Unfortunately the one I got from Costco labeled "Professional Garment Steamer" did not have a trigger to emit the steam, and simply worked on a thermostat which boiled the water in a chamber at the base until the thermostat reached it's maximum temperature, and then shut off until it cooled off enough for the heater to turn on again. Basically it is a steamer that works for 30 seconds or so, then shuts off for 30 seconds or so, and then turns back on again. So, if you don't mind doing your steaming 30 seconds at a time it works ok at best. My experience was that it didn't really put out enough heat to really get the wrinkles completely out like an iron. My Costco brand "Kirkland wrinkle free" 100% cotton shirt that I steamed as a test article only looked less wrinkled than it was, but by no means was it unwrinkled (like an iron). I don't think this steamer would save any time steaming your clothes in lieu of ironing due to it's on/off duty cycle. I should have guessed that it was an inferior product since it says "Professional" on the box (no prefessional would ever use this product). As with any product, if they have to tell you it's "professional" you can be assured that it is not.
In defense of this product I must say that it seemed somewhat more stout than other steamers that I've seen at Costco which appeared flimsy, and therefore I didn't buy them.
In conclusion, Costco is a great place to shop, because if you buy some crappy product there, they will always take it back, which I will do tomorrow. I won't fork out the $300 to get a real steamer that really works because you can get a lot of shirts laundered at the cleaners for $300, and all I have to do is drop them off and pick them up (which is still a pain).

Rowenta DG5030 Pressure Iron and Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased Model DG5030 to replace my old Rowenta Pressure Iron and Steamer (with blue water tank). My old iron was perfect and I expected this new one to be even better. However, much to my chagrin, it has two major defects: no matter what the iron temperature or steam settings, water drips (sometimes quite a bit) onto the fabric to be ironed. Also, since the water tank is completely enclosed, one cannot see how much water remains in the tank. Upon contacting Rowenta, I was told that these 2 defects are being "duly noted" in their customer files and that I was not the only consumer to complain. I am greatly disappointed that a company with the stature of Rowenta would not either offer to fix the iron, considering its cost or let me return it. I have written and e-mailed them with the further information that I knew of several other consumers with the same problem(s) so this iron obviously needs re-designing. Until these problems are addressed, I would not advise purchasing this model.

Rowenta DG8030 Expert Steam Generator Review

(More customer reviews)Steam generator irons are very common in Europe (where I am from originally) and buyers are provided with extra information that to my mind makes a huge difference in the purchasing decision. In the United States, however, few models exist and compete on the market and this data may not be so helpful as there is not much choice besides the Rowenta line (of 2). I suspect consumers iron less in this country and make more use of cleaners' services. However, I thought I'd share the information I found for the benefit of European buyers, more sophisticated buyers or more thorough minded buyers.
Rowenta was kind enough to give me the information I was looking for after some inquiry with their technical department. Here it is: the steam pressure is 4 bars (pretty good) and the continuous steam flow is 90g/min (so so for steam generators). I was not given data for the steam boost output which is important for a deep crease removal. The heating time at start is 3 min. The machine does not have auto-calc cleaning.
Top of the range pressure ironing systems in Europe now have 5 bars of steam pressure for fast ironing (pressurised steam penetrates deep into fabrics making ironing fast and easy, even on difficult fabrics) and at least 120g/min of continuous steam output for fast crease removal. Steam boost blast is around or above 170g/min. Heating time is 2 minutes and the system has an auto cleaning program for calc. deposits.
To my mind, this Rowenta product performance criteria are in line with its price. I am very seriously considering purchasing it.

Most hand steamers do, so it just comes down to whether or not they perform as designed and what features and bells and whistles they come with. So far this Rowenta has performed very well for me and I love a lot of the little features and design touches as well.
PROS
--Pump driven steam results in stronger and steadier bursts than the types which merely boil the water
--Can be held at any angle. Some hand steamers only work when you hold them vertically. The pump mechanism in this unit means you can hold it however you like.
--Trigger lets you apply steam only when needed
--Removable bristle brush. Use the steamer with or without the brush
--Removable tank. Easier than refilling the whole steamer at the faucet
--Uses tap water. They actually recommend tap over distilled.
--Ergonomic handle. The curvature makes it very easy to hold and apply pressure to the clothes.
--Loop on handle. I can easily hang it up after use in the bathroom
--Comes with a convenient storage case
CONS
--The water tank is a little small, so you may have to refill it a few times. I got through about two lightly wrinkled shirts on one tank. This is about the only negative I can think of for this model.
Garment steamers may be new to many and I suspect some of the bad reviews come from people who just don't know how to use them or have unrealistic expectations. They are not meant to completely replace an iron which may be more efficient for some heavy duty ironing tasks (for example if you like to iron your bed sheets or a similar type job). On the other hand, it can be used more easily than an iron for MOST of my ironing jobs -- and it can even go where my iron can't! For example, knits and sweaters. Ever try to iron a sweater? You can't. But I found this steamer can easily take wrinkles out of a sweater that was wrinkled due to storage as well as other knits that I wouldn't dare place an iron on. I wear a lot of knits, so discovering garment steamers has been a revelation for me.
Here are some tips -- 1) You do have to pull the fabric a little taut as you hold the head of the steamer against or near it to get good results. You have to pull harder on woven fabrics than with knits which you only have to tug a tiny bit. 2) I have an old ironing mitt, and I find it works great with the steamer. It acts like a mini ironing board and makes it easier to use the steamer as I can firmly press the head of it (without the brush attached) against some fabrics to get better results. 3) If you're having problems using the steamer, use it without the bristle brush attachment. With many fabrics and jobs, I get better results this way.
I've only had this Rowenta steamer for a month, so I don't know how well it will hold up over time. But so far I couldn't be happier. I've used it successfully so far on lots of types of clothing including cotton capris pants, cotton knit pique tops, and a medium weight synthetic knit sweater. I'm not big on ironing to begin with and do it as little as possible. But now with this little steamer I find myself touching up clothes more often whereas beforehand I'd just skip the iron because it was too much of a hassle to use.
One more thing: One reviewer said theirs leaked water. They must have a defective unit or are using it wrong because I don't get a drop of excess water anywhere with mine. Just pure steam. None of my clothing comes out "wet" either. I'm also baffled by another reviewer who said it burned their hand and the trigger area gets hot. I have no such problems. Yes, the steamer itself gets hot, but not so hot that I can't use it or it will cause injury (be careful with the steam though). It's mild compared to how hot an iron gets.

When I bought this 19.95 item I had no idea they would charge me 15.95 for shipping and handling. I could have swore they said 5.95 on the phone. At any rate I decided to suck it up and try it and see if it was good as it said it was. It stinks. I was trying to get wrinkles out of cotton and it didn't work. Don't waste you hard earned money. It takes less time to iron. I can return it but they "less shipping and handling" and of course I will have to pay to have it shipped.

I had a conair before I got this one. It finally gave in after 3 years. And I needed a new one.
This one is cheap and does what I need it too.
It starts steaming very quickly and gets the basic wrinkles out of my clothes for work.
It is not an iron and does not make anything look amazing crisp. But I never thought it would.
I just want to be able to take a shirt off of my floor that might not look too good and steam it out so it is wearable. That is exactly what this steamer does.
I love it and I can not live without one.

Jiffy Steamer ESTEAM Travel Steamers Review

(More customer reviews)I compared this travel model with the full-size J-2000 steamer. They were both very good at removing wrinkles from business-type clothing. We steamed a full week's wardrobe, and the clothing done with the travel steamer looked just as good as the others. The only drawback to the travel model is related to its small size - it needs to be refilled every 3-6 garments, and the smaller steam head means that it takes longer to steam an item. However, I actually found that the small steam head worked better on small areas like collars and cuffs, especially since it has squared corners. The corners mean that you do have to be a bit careful with delicate knits, though. Worth the price if you really need to look your best when you travel.

Home Touch PS-200 Perfect Steam Commercial Garment Steamer Review

(More customer reviews)(Updating my review after 6 mos of use.) I've found the Homemedics PS-200 "Perfect Steam" has been fine for all types of clothing. This is the smallest, value-priced model, so I wouldn't expect it have enough steam for thick upholstery or to press creases and folds (It's upright. Commercial steamers don't do this either without a flat surface! They're for removing wrinkles- not pressing clothes.) I bought it to use instead of a steam iron- and for the same price, it's faster and easier. It has worked for denim jeans, suits, blankets, wrinkled khakis and dress shirts. Read the manual for tips- it helps to have the pole all the way up. When the hose starts to gurgle, water is condensing in the hose. Just hold the hose straight up and let the water drip back into the tank. The manual says this is normal and the condensation does not affect the steam. I find it's ready in 15 seconds! Also, steam runs consistently when the clothing is hung higher than the pole- meaning I have to hang clothing from the top of a door frame or shower rod. The hose is long enough to reach but (obviously) the pole could have been made to extend a foot taller, but I'm sure it would have made the unit too unstable (tip over more easily with added height) - it's a very lightweight unit with a small base. It's small enough to fit inside my tiny closet. Distilled water is a must in Colorado. The water does need to be emptied out after each use or else mildew/mold will form. You may have to lift and tip the unit over a sink and shake the hose to completely empty. I was expecting much less for the price and was pleasantly surprised.

I decided to purchase this garment steamer to use on sewing projects and my clothing. It's fabulous. It heats up extremely quickly, and you can steam for several hours with it.
TIPS:
Make sure to use distilled water with the steamer to avoid mineral build up that can cause sputtering and discoloration of water. Also, I find that if you fold up cheesecloth into 3 layers and use a rubber band to hold it to the steam head, it will protect delicate fabrics and provide a more even steam flow.
If you are using this to steam something like a big heavy dress or curtains, please do yourself a favor and purchase a set of string knit gloves from a store like Harbor Freight to protect your hands. $6 to protect yourself from 2nd degree burns is better than a trip to the ER! (Trust me, I know, and it only takes a fraction of a second for a steam burn to happen!)
To sum up, this steamer is better than any junky plastic one marked "commercial" that you will find in a store. Jiffy Steamers are truly what people in the garment industry rely on. Very sturdy, quick heating, and better than ironing any day. You will not be disappointed!
